I've read my fair share of fantasy romance, fantasy thriller etc about vampires, werewolf, shifters, witches and fair folks. And I came across this book "Love's Prisoner (Wyndham Werewolf #1)" by MaryJanice Davidson
It's a short short where the male lead is the werewolf, an alpha and supposed to lead thousands of weres across the globe. And the female lead is a brave, strong, witty human.
The plot is quite interesting in the beginning.
They are stuck in a elevator and he can't control himself as it is almost full moon, rapes her and saves her from a falling elevator.
Three week later she realizes that she is pregnant. He turns up on her door, says he loves her, kidnaps her and locks her down in his house without properly explaining or giving her a chance to understand the whole werewolf thing.
Now this is what is surprising...
One minute she is confused, hurt, angry, frustrated, scared of everything and suddenly the next moment she is having sex with him saying "I love you". Umm.. Like so fast?
I understand the sexual tension between them is very intense. We've read that shifters are highly sensual beings but then this shift from hate to love is so abrupt.
I know this is a short story but it was too short. I had just started getting into the book but it was over before I even started liking the characters.
This would have been a better story if the characters were given some time to develop the love and trust between each other, understand where they come from and try to adjust into each other life, understand what they did and why they did it, given her time to get over her hurt feelings and realize that he genuinely loves her, etc. Just a few pages extra would have done. May be two or three.
The plot's OK but it has a very poor character development. I wanted to see how the romance blooms between them after the first encounter. How they sort out their differences and misunderstandings. How they are going to start trusting each other and support each other. But in the end I get this..
Or may be it was because i expected a full-fledged novel.. '\("_")/'
P.S. this book was published in 2000. I just stumbled across it now.
P.S. I'd like to say that don't judge a book by it's cover and not by review as well, because my perception and views will be very different from yours. It is not necessary that you like what I like and dislike what I dislike.
Read the book before you judge it.
